Summary:
Bois Forte Reservation has an enrolled membership of 2,600 persons. The Reservation is comprised of three land bases; Nett Lake, the seat of Tribal government, 103,000 acres, located 60 miles south of International Falls, 400 residents; Lake Vermilion, 2,000 acres, located 60 miles east of Nett Lake, 200 residents; and Deer Creek, 120 acres of Tribal land with no current residents.
The Band if a self-governance Tribe and operates nearly all Bureau of Indian Affairs and Indian Health Service programs under compact with these respective agencies. Nett Lake and Lake Vermilion each has its own outpatient medical/dental clinics and community centers. A Senior Assisted Living Center was constructed and opened in 1998 in Nett Lake, the first such facility on any Minnesota Reservation.
In Nett Lake, Tribal government is the largest employer with approximately 150 employees. The Tribe also owns and operates the Multi-Service Center, a convenience store and gas station employing four persons. Fortune Bay Resort and Casino, at Lake Vermilion, is one of the largest employers in the area employing 450. A new Heritage and Cultural Center is open near Fortune Bay. A new golf course "The Wilderness at Fortune Bay" and a new fitness center in Nett Lake opened in 2004.
