Summary:
Federally recognized as the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, Grand Portage covers an area of over 56,000 acres in the northeastern most tip of Minnesota. Of the over 1,000 enrolled band members, over 200 live in Grand Portage. The Grand Portage Band is proud owners and operators of the Grand Portage Lodge & Casino as well as a local convenience store and gas station.
In addition to the businesses, Grand Portage provides an Elementary School, Community Center, Day Care, Head Start, Elderly Nutrition and Assistance, Health Clinic and other Human Services programs. A new Elderly Living facility has been added to the reservation allowing the elders of Grand Portage the opportunity to live in Grand Portage instead of areas away from home.
Grand Portage also plays host to two very important areas. The Grand Portage National Monument (one of only two National Monuments in Minnesota) is a reconstructed North West Company fur trading depot located on the very site where it stood during its operations from 1730-1805. The Grand Portage State Park, located on the Pigeon River, is the site of Minnesota's highest waterfall, named appropriately, High Falls.
