Summary:
The Prairie Island Indian Community is located on an island in the Mississippi River 14 miles north of Red Wing and 30 miles southeast of St. Paul. The tribal headquarters is located near Welch, Minnesota and has members mainly of the Mdewankanton Band.
The mission of the Prairie Island Tribal Council is to provide a holistic, culturally based approach to program services that promotes family support and wellness, education, political and economic growth, and environmental protection that will lead to self-esteem and self-sufficiency for individual members, incorporated with unity for the Prairie Island Mdewakanton Dakota.
